Characters from Hoopoe books

“These Teaching-Stories can be experienced on many levels. A child may simply enjoy hearing them; an adult may analyze them in a more sophisticated way. Both may eventually benefit from the lessons within.”

These special stories have been told for centuries all along the Silk Road and particularly by the peoples of Afghanistan and Central Asia. Now every child in the world can enjoy them, because they really are universal – they talk about aspects of being human that we all share: our hopes, fears, weaknesses and strengths. And, once remembered, these stories can help children throughout life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR OF THE HOOPOE BOOKS SERIES:

Idries Shah, who came from Paghman, Afghanistan, spent 30 years of his life collecting, selecting, and translating stories from this tradition and from many oral sources. For Teaching-Stories and narratives written by him for an adult audience, Click Here.

Educators and psychologists call these tales Teaching-Stories because they help us understand our world and ourselves. Each story provides a readily accessible blueprint that prepares the child for similarly structured events, actions and thoughts in their own life. They give a child different ways to look at problems that otherwise might be too perplexing. Adults, too, through these wonderful tales, find alternative ways of understanding, reacting and doing things and so make more productive choices.

The psychologist and author Robert Ornstein points out that Teaching-Stories exist in all cultures and that an analysis of the stories throughout the world shows that the same stories occur time and again in different cultures.

In addition, these tales show how much we have in common with people from these rich cultures, and how much we can learn from each other. You and your children can get acquainted with them by taking advantage of the special introductory offers below, purchasing books, or books and CDs.

The Lion Who Saw Himself in the Water CDEach CD has three tracks: Track 1 is an introduction; track 2 is a reading of the story with page-turn signals for early “independent” readers; track 3 is without signals – ideal listening material when you and your family are traveling!

To get the most out of these tales, take a look at our free Online Manuals and fun projects to download and use along with each story.
